The Frugal Kitchen

Chewy Sugar Cookies

Ingredients:

2 ¾ cups flour

1 tsp baking soda

½ tsp baking powder

1 cup softened butter

1 ½ cups white sugar

1 egg

1 tsp vanilla extract

3-4 tbsp buttermilk

sprinkles or colored sugar

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Mix dry ingredients in bowl. Cream sugar and butter. Add vanilla and egg. Gradually blend in dry ingredients. Add enough buttermilk to make soft but not wet (*usually for me takes 3 tbsp). Form well rounded teaspoons of dough – place on cookie sheet (these will expand a bit and flatten out, so leave enough room). Slightly flatten top of cookies – brush w/buttermilk – sprinkle w/sugar. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until slightly golden – let stand for 2 minutes before removing to cooling rack.

(Makes about 4 dozen)
